A 2008 report from the Virginia Department of Health shows that the economic and social conditions within which children are born and raised affect them throughout their lives. Before they’re born and as they grow into adults, children go through several critical development periods—the environmental, social and economic elements in a child’s life may influence the body’s physiology for the remainder of that person’s life.
These include such effects as an increased potential for low birth weight babies among females and future risk of diabetes, hypertension and heart disease among children who were low birth weight or who grew up in poverty.
What effects do you see poverty having on children’s health in our community?
What are we doing today in our community to create and sustain positive social, economic and environmental conditions in support of our children’s health?
What other ways could we further support these efforts?
