The Virginia Employment Commission reported that the Fredericksburg region unemployment rate dropped one percent in July to 6.4 percent. Despite this slight decrease in unemployment, the Fredericksburg region continues to be troubled by higher-than-normal joblessness.

What can RUW do to reduce joblessness in the Fredericksburg region?

What can RUW do to support local area residents who are unemployed?

Reducing joblessness may be really difficult. I don't know that United Way would have much of an effect on creating more jobs. The only thing I can think of is providing more job training to those who are unemployed and to high school students. This will ensure that more people in our area have the skills they need to be employed.

REQUIRED resume, interview, and social skills training for high school students!

Teach them how to interview and to act and dress for those interviews. Explain, explain, explain how to work -- that work is not a part time committment even if the hours are part time. We don't do a good job of demonstrating good work ethics anymore. At least if given that kind of training/instruction, when they do get an interview and hopefully a job, they will be able to keep it.
