Tobacco Use By Teens in Virginia

According to findings from the 2007 Virginia Youth Tobacco Survey, nearly a third of middle and high school students smoked cigarettes at least once during their lifetime (31%).  These rates are lower than 2001, when 49.7% of students smoked at least once.

Smoking isn’t limited to middle and high school students, though.  Just over a tenth (11%) of sixth graders previously smoked.  By the 12th grade, 54% of students have previously smoked during their lifetime.  More young men than young women tried smokeless tobacco and other forms of tobacco products.

How can we discourage youth from trying cigarettes and tobacco products?

What can we do as a community to better educate youth about the dangers of smoking and chewing?

How can we further encourage good health and healthy habits among youth?
