How to Improve On-Time Graduation Rates?

Recent data from the Virginia Department of Education shows that the On-time Graduation Rate (graduating within four years from entering the 9th grade) for students in the Commonwealth was 81% during 2007-2008. For students with disabilities, the On-time Graduate Rate was about the same, just over 81%.

However, rates for particular groups are lower:  for Hispanic students, the rate is 70.4% and for disadvantaged students, it’s 69.8%. About 73% of migrant students graduate on-time and just 58.7% of homeless students do so.

What can we do to support higher on-time graduation rates among all students?

What can we do to support higher on-time graduation rates among particular groups of students, such as those who are homeless or other groups?

There need to be more after school programs available for teens. These programs need to provided mentorship, tutoring and life skills for this age group. Obviously some of these programs need to be delivered with sensitivity to ethnic background as well.
