Living in Poverty in the Fredericksburg Area

Did you know that the total percent of total population for Fredericksburg living in poverty has been consistently higher than both the state and national rate?

Recent data also shows that 2,774 people in the Fredericksburg area received food stamps in October 2008.

By comparison, one in ten individuals in Virginia live in poverty, according to the Poverty in Virginia: Recommendations from the Commonwealth of Virginia’s Poverty Reduction Task Force Report.

What do these figures tell us about Income in our community? In what ways can we address these challenges as a community?

I think we need to change how we define 'poverty' - how on earth is a family of four supposed to survive on just $22,000 a year? Even $32,000 is not enough to live in this area and afford the basics of life. How can our service providers (teachers, fire-fighters, nurses etc) even afford to live and work here???

The last comment really makes sense. Affordable housing is a real problem in this area. My daughter is a teacher and she cannot afford a place of her own. I would know where to begin addressing this problem. Maybe our local governments should stop approving subdivisions with 4000+ square foot houses and drive the market toward more reasonably priced housing. Also, maybe additional real estate tax breaks could be given to lower income service providers like our teachers, fire-fighters, nurses, etc.
